According to the World Health Organization, chronic degenerative conditions now represent the number one health threat globally. That being said, any employer, organization or corporation is employing more than thirty percent of employees that are living with a chronic condition. The biggest challenge is the unpredictability of chronic illness. In addition to dealing with symptoms, employees have to take medications, which throw side effects into their condition, and doctors’ appointments. All those factors affect employees’’ energy levels, decrease productivity, and create many sick days. Because modern work values high productivity and reliability, working with employees with a chronic condition requires an understanding of their condition and special approach to their management.

As many chronic degenerative conditions are largely preventable, lifestyle choices play a huge role in the level of health and overall functioning. People who get educated on a Healthy Lifestyle are more prone to make better choices and improve their work productivity and energy levels. Especially conditions like type 2 diabetes, obesity, coronary artery disease. Alzheimer’s, and even cancer, are closely linked to the diet and other lifestyle choices.
Yet, the management of companies is in a difficult position as it has to address the special needs of employees with chronic disease, as well as the needs of the organization. As there is already hefty pressure on the education and training of all managers the solution should be specifically tailored to this population and job management. I have developed a step by step program to provide helpful advice to management about having conversations with a worker about their health.
As a Doctor of Business and Administration with focus on Management and a Psychologist with 20 years of work history in Health Psychology, I specialize in working with employers and management on management of employees with chronic conditions, as well as on creating Health Supportive Plans and Return to Work Plans for their employees. Management educated on the special needs of their employees helps them to be more comfortable at work, be more open about their condition, make batter choices, which will lead to better productivity and fewer absences.
