With the threat of coronavirus and flu season in full swing, there is an increased need to support your immune system. Did you know that the best way to prevent many diseases is by taking increased amounts and varieties of probiotics?

Your gut is responsible for 80% of your immune system.

With 2020 being one of the worst years for the flu, it is time to be smart and protect your help by taking steps in preventing you from getting sick. It is much easier to do prevention then be sorry later. It is much harder on your body to heal from illnesses than to get help and prevent those from happening altogether.

Let me walk you through a couple of simple probiotic options. Your best bet is on freshly made probiotics. Those could be easily made at home or bought at the store.

My number 1 probiotic would be Kombucha tea. This great-tasting lightly fizzy drink is easy to make (see here), but many health food stores also offer a variety of flavorings of this popular probiotic drink. Kombucha tea has been made for centuries, has been called a miracle drink as well as a drink of immortality. You can see that this drink has been highly valued for its extensive health benefits. And it is easy to add it to your daily routine for flu prevention.

My second choice would be kefir. If you are like me, you might be out of luck if you start looking for dairy-free kefir at the store. For this reason, I make my own. However, the rest of you who can have milk-based kefir, you should be able to find an excellent selection at the store, especially once that focus more on healthy foods. Look for the one that has been freshly made (there is a difference between expiration date and date when it was made).

Keep it in mind that probiotics are called probiotics because they contain live bacteria. And as anything live, bacteria start dying soon after they are taken out of a friendly environment with food. So, once the kefir is packaged, bacteria start dying slowly. The sooner you can get it, the more beneficial bacteria you will get in your kefir. You may want to ask why I chose kefir over yogurt. There is a straightforward reason for this. Kefir offers a much more diverse bacteria culture, then yogurt does. So, it is much more beneficial for your health.

Number three would be Kimchi, which is a Korean cultured vegetable. Many of you might be more familiar with sauerkraut, which is famous around Europe.  Both of them are cultured vegetables, but Kimchi includes a variety of vegetables, while sauerkraut is only cabbage.  Both would be very beneficial to your immune system.

At this time of the higher risk of catching flu, it would be crucial to add some probiotics to your meals a few times a day. Keep doing this till the risk declines and stay healthy. Don’t forget to protect your loved ones too!
